Roots Tileable Texture WIP

Hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving!  I know I did!  Unfortunately, my family is all the way out in New Jersey, so I didn't get to visit them.  I instead stayed in my cozy apartment and worked on my tileable textures haha
I had to work on a different tileable texture for my online class so I began to work on this.  I know absolutely nothing about texturing (other than dragging and dropping textures from a material onto an object). This has proven to be extremely difficult, but I got around to learning how to use xNormal and the basics of the different map types.  I am meeting up with a friend on Monday for 2 hours to talk about the basics of texturing.  After that is done, I will continue to work on both this and the leaves tileable texture when I have free time.

What is fortunate but also bad news, is that I will have to move on and start making a highly detailed mountain scene soon.   I will obviously be putting in more work into that more than anything else.  So just prepare to see more mountain stuff.

Tileable Texture WIP

This is a part of a tileable texture that I'm creating from scratch using 3ds Max.  I should be done with this by the end of the week.

*UPDATE*
Here is another progress shot of some branches and leaves.

Damaged Pillar Photoshop Renders

Here is my Damaged Pillar!  This is an artist study I did of David Lesperance's destroyed pillar.  I currently am taking an online class being thaught by him.  The techniques taught by David have helped me to create the work below.  These are renders done through photoshop.  I'm going to take it into another rendering program and play around with it when I get the chance.  For now this is what I have.  I just got sunk into doing this tonight, I couldn't resist working on this today!  More "realistic renders" to come, and that will be the last I work on this.  Feedback would be great!

Damaged Pillar ZBrush WIP

Here is what I have so far of the Pillar sculpted in ZBrush.  All that is left to do is a bit of texturing, adding more damage, and rendering it out.  I do have a lot of work pilling up starting in the morning so I don't know if I can finish it by tomorrow, but I will definitely have it done by the end of the week!  And as always, critiques welcome!

Damaged Pillar WIP

This is a damaged pillar asset made in 3ds Max, that I'm currently working on.  I just finished the base model and am about to take this into Zbrush and then render it out!

Full Sized Mountain Concepts

I thought a lot of the video game series, SSX while making this one.  The environments in SSX capture a nice sense of scale and I wanted to aim for that .  Mine wasn't exactly getting the feeling I wanted but I learned that I should scale the textures down a bit more to capture that sense, and will make sure to do so in the future.

This mountain was probably the most fun to do out of all the mountains!  Learning how to do moonlight and the different tonal ranges was critical to making this work.  This really got me thinking of new ideas for some future pieces!

Mountain Mood Concepts

This is a day cycle in a mountainous environment.  This is my first attempt at doing a full compositional environment piece in 3D.  I carried over the much needed lessons learned from the rock asset creation and attempted to build this. I used a terrain builder along with Zbrush and Photoshop to achieve the work above.  I put more focus on composition and lighting in this more than anything.  I wanted to capture quick concepts for future environment pieces.  It was a fun learning experience and definitely look forward to making more of these!

Rock Asset Speed Sculpt

This is my first attempt at trying to create a rock asset in Zbrush.  I created a single rock asset and scaled, rotated, and adjusted many different copies of it to create the above structures.  It doesn't look very "mountain-ish" but I learned a lot about what not to do when making rocks and a lot about lighting (especially how light can take away form from a mountain if not done carefully).

Welcome!

Hello everyone!
I'm Dean Gomez, and this blog will include a myriad of my artwork and designs as I create them.  Expect to see environment concepts, fully crafted 3D environments, gesture drawings, levels, and user interface concepts.
Feel free to leave comments and feedback if you so desire on any of the work I post.  I'm always curious to hear other people's feedback, especially during the preproduction stage of my process!  I'm a firm believer that process is everything, so just prepare to see a ton of process work.

Hope you enjoy,
Dean R. Gomez
